Well, I don't know whether sending an entire fleet anywhere is a smart option, but the Midway Island does undeniably have a great importance. It lies in the middle of the distance between America and Asia, and as such it could be used by the enemy as a base for a possible attack. It gives a great advantage for the US to be in control of this island.
