The split refers to the different opinions about who was the rightful successor of Mohammad: all of the four caliphs (Sunnis think so) or only one of them, Ali (Shiia). Ali was killed in the early fight for power, and his two sons were too, which has contributed to the feeling of martyrdom among the Shiia.
