Why do whole numbers raised to an exponent get greater while fractions raised to an exponent get smaller?

Because a fraction is a part of a whole so is you keep on having to make the fraction greater then you are making its part of a whole less

because multiplying a number by a whole number makes it bigger whereas multiplying a number by a fraction (or decimal) makes it smaller.
