The signing of the Magna Carta in 1215 by King John of England limited royal power over the nobility and limited the power of the monarch more generally as well. The Magna Carta helped to establish specific rights and limitations in English Governance that squarely placed the monarch under the law and not above it which had been the previous status of the monarch.
