The patriots hated the navigational laws. they didn't want to be stuck with just trading with the mother country. so they resorted to smuggling with other countries like Spain and France. The navigational laws restricted them a lot and honestly didn't really give them much of a profit. But in the 1660's British rulers wanted to enforce these laws much more, but they patriots still disobeyed them.
