The correct answer is paleomagnetism. This is mostly done, however, in regards to the magnetic properties found in the earth itself, like in rocks and minerals or ores, and less with the actual magnetic poles of the earth, but it does encompas it too. It is very useful in the science of tectonic movements and discovering the chonology of geology.
